Philippine Airlines Essay
Philippine Airlines, Inc. (abbreviated as PAL and also known historically as Philippine Air Lines) operating as Philippine Airlines, is a flag carrier of the Philippines. Headquartered at the Philippine National Bank Financial Center in Pasay City,[2][3] the airline was founded in 1941 and is the first and oldest commercial airline in Asia operating under its original name. 4] Out of its hubs at Ninoy Aquino International Airport of Manila and Mactan-Cebu International Airport of Cebu City, Philippine Airlines serves twenty destinations in the Philippines and 26 destinations in Southeast Asia, South Asia, East Asia, Oceania and North America. [5] Formerly one of the largest Asian airlines, PAL was severely affected by the 1997 Asian Financial Crisis. In one of the Philippinesââ¬â¢ biggest corporate failures, PAL was forced to downsize its international operations by completely cutting flights to Europe and Middle East, cutting virtually all domestic flights except routes operated from Manila, reducing the size of its fleet, and laying off thousands of employees. The airline was placed under receivership in 1998, and gradually restored operations to many destinations. PAL exited receivership in 2007. Philippine Aerial Taxi Companyà On November 14, 1935 Philippine Congress approved the franchise of Philippine Aerial Taxi Company, Incorporated (PATCO) to provide mail, cargo and passenger service particularly in the island of Luzon. The company then had scheduled Manila-Baguio and Manila-Paracale flights. [6] The company became dormant for six years on its scheduled passenger operation under its assigned routes. [4] Philippine Air Lines On February 26, 1941 Philippine Air Lines, Inc. y a group of businessmen led by Andres Soriano ââ¬â hailed as one of the Philippinesââ¬â¢ leading industrialists at the time,[7] who served as general manager, and former Senator Ramon Fernandez, who served as chairman and president. Philippine Air Lines, Inc. acquired the franchise of Philippine Aerial Taxi Company, Incorporated, thus the birth of Philippine Airlines. The airlineââ¬â¢s first flight took place on March 15, 1941 with a single Beech craft Model 18 NPC-54 on daily services between Manila (from Nielson Field) and Baguio. [7] On July 22 the airline cquired the franchise of the Philippine Aerial Taxi Company. Government investment in September paved the way for its nationalization. Entry of San Miguel Corporation (2012-present) On April 4, 2012, San Miguel Corporation bought a 49-percent stake in Philippine Airlines for $500 million as part of a strategy to move away from its beer and food businesses. San Miguel, one of the Philippinesââ¬â¢ biggest conglomerates, said it planned to help modernise PALââ¬â¢s aging fleet and rejuvenate Asiaââ¬â¢s oldest commercial airline, which has lost its status as the nationââ¬â¢s top carrier in recent years. San Miguel president Ramon Ang said the $500-million investment had bought his company a 49-percent stake in PAL and its low-cost offshoot, Airphil Express (AirPhil). ââ¬Å"The new investment will allow the two airlines to strengthen operations and stay competitive with the implementation of PAL and AirPhilââ¬â¢s fleet modernization,â⬠said a joint statement from PAL chairman Lucio Tan and San Miguel. Ang also stated that they are planning to join a global airline alliance. Billionaire Tan, the countryââ¬â¢s second-wealthiest man, is PALââ¬â¢s controlling shareholder. 34] DestinationsPhilippine Airlines operates two hubs in Manila and Cebu. Virtually all PAL routes are operated from its hubs, with the majority of routes operating from Manila. Domestically, PAL flies to major Philippine cities from Manila and Cebu. It flies between Manila, and Cebu to a lesser extent, and cities in Asia-Pacific, the western United States, Canada and Australia. Many destinations served by PAL, especially destinations in the United States, Canada, Australia, Japan and Hong Kong, are areas with large overseas Filipino populations. citation needed] PAL currently operates three non-hub routes, Bangkok-Delhi, Singapore-Jakarta and Sydney-Melbourne. In the past, PAL operated a number of domestic and international non-hub routes (most notably Iloilo-General Santos, Vancouver-New York, Vancouver-Las Vegas and Zurich-Paris), as well as non-stop services to destinations in Europe and extensive domestic operations; those services were discontinued in light of the Asian financial crisis. Some of its previous domestic operations, namely, service from Manila to Naga, Tuguegarao, and more recently, Ozamiz have been taken over by Airphil Express, while services to others were stopped altogether. In addition, services to Legazpi City, Puerto Princesa, Butuan, Cagayan de Oro, Cotabato City, Dipolog, Zamboanga City, Dumaguete and Tacloban, while retaining the ââ¬Å"PRâ⬠flight codes, have been operated by Airphil Express on behalf of PAL since 28 October 2012. Service to the Middle East continued after the Asian financial crisis; however, that was also eventually discontinued due to high fuel prices and an oversupply of seats, as well as intense competition from Middle Eastern carriers. PAL discontinued service toRiyadh, its last Middle Eastern destination, on 2 March 2006, and re-introduced flights again in 2010 but discontinued once again in April 2011. PAL maintains code-share agreements with carriers based in that region, specifically with Emirates to Dubai, Etihad to Abu Dhabi, Gulf Air to Bahrain, and Qatar Airways to Doha. After exiting from receivership, PAL has expressed interest in increasing its frequencies to Canada such as an expansion to Toronto and Montreal, introducing flights to Dhaka, Guangzhou and Mumbai, and expanding its presence in the United States by commencing service to Saipan, Seattle, Dallas, San Diego, and Houston, as well as restoring service to Chicago and New York,[51] and restoring service to India and Europe,[52][53] as well as the Middle East. [54] The downgrading of the Philippinesââ¬â¢ aviation status by the Federal Aviation Administration however, has prevented PAL from expanding its coverage in the United States. PAL commenced Manila to Toronto service effective November 30, 2012 with a stop-over in Vancouver(YVR) on the Toronto-to-Manila leg. On 15 October 2010, Philippine Airlines announced that its Manilaââ¬âBrisbane services will be suspended indefinitely as of October 31, with Melbourne-bound services reduced from 5 flights a week to 3. The company cited marketing considerations for the suspension of Brisbane services. [55] However, more recently, the airline has since recommenced a daily frequency to Australia: Sydney is served four days a week and Melbourne three using a B777-300ER plane. The former triangular routing that served both Australian cities on one flight was discontinued in favour of direct flights. The carrier re-introduced flights to New Delhi after decades of absence in the Indian subcontinent; there were initially three direct flights while three other flights stopped at Bangkokââ¬â¢s Suvarnabhumi Airport. [56]However, as of 18 March 2012, Philippine Airlines discontinued it direct flight to New Delhi and retained the thrice-weekly New Delhi via Bangkok flights. On 28 April 2012, Philippine Airlines re-established its direct air links between Manila and Bali, Indonesiaââ¬â¢s prime holiday destination, via twice-weekly flights departing Manila every Wednesday and Saturday. It is the airlineââ¬â¢s second destination in Indonesia, following Jakarta, the countryââ¬â¢s capital, where the flag carrier flies five times a week direct from Manila and four times a week via Singapore. [57] On 23 July 2012, PAL announced that it will launch non-stop flights to Toronto on November 30, 2012. [58] The Philippinesââ¬â¢ flag carrier is also planning to launch direct flights from Manila to New York and some key cities in Europe. However, PAL is being prevented since the FAA made PH under category 2, which prevents PAL to expand its U. S. network, and blacklisting PH aviation by EU, which stops Philippine Airlines in restoring its previous European routes. [59] Philippine Airlines (PAL) has filed with the Civil Aeronautics Board (CAB) permit to start flight to Moscowââ¬â¢s Domodedovo Airport in Russia Capital starting September 2013, using the high-gross variant of Airbus A330-300 aircraft 4 times weekly. Moscow flight leaves Manila on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Sundays, with Turkey flight leaving Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday. It is the second destination in Europe to be flown by PAL after announcing flights to Turkey beginning August 5. Both destinations are outside the European Union. PAL is also slated to fly daily services on the Manila-Kuwait route by April 2013 usingAirbus A330-300, while daily flights to Darwin, extending 3 mornings a week to Brisbane and 4 mornings a week to Perth commence on 1 June 2013 using Airbus A320s. [60] Philippine Airlines soon to launch flights to Sao Paulo, Brazil with stopovers on Los Angeles. [61] A codeshare agreement, sometimes simply codeshare, is an aviation business arrangement where two or more airlines share the same flight. A seat can be purchased on one airline but is actually operated by a cooperating airline under a different flight number or code. The term ââ¬Å"codeâ⬠refers to the identifier used in flight schedule, generally the two-character IATA airline designator code and flight number. Thus, XX123, flight 123 operated by the airline XX, might also be sold by airline YY as YY456 and by ZZ as ZZ9876. It allows greater access to cities through a given airlineââ¬â¢s network without aving to offer extra flights, and makes connections simpler by allowing single bookings across multiple planes. Most major airlines today have code sharing partnerships with other airlines and code sharing is a key feature of the major airline alliances. Under a code sharing agreement, the airline that actually operates the flight (the one providing the plane, the crew and the ground handling services) is called the operating carrier. The company or companies that sell tickets for that flight but do not actually operate it are called marketing carriers.

“Night” Point of View Essay
David Wicks1-15-12 Mr. ChesnoffEnglish 10H P. O. V #2 As the seemingly endless, grueling, painful run from camp to camp came to an end, we had to endure yet another horrible situation. Due to the excitement of arriving at our destination, we all packed into the barracks too quickly. People were being trampled and suffocated under the mad dash of the freezing bodies. I was one of the unlucky ones who had been pushed, shoved and fell and now was being crushed under the weight of the ice cold flesh.I surely would have been killed by the lack of air or under the immense amount of weight that was crushing my frail body. I stayed calm for a moment to collect my thoughts and then gathered up my strength to yell, ââ¬Ëâ⬠Youââ¬â¢re crushing meâ⬠¦ have mercy! ââ¬â¢ I thought, Iââ¬â¢ve made it this far and I canââ¬â¢t die like this. Once more I mustered up the strength to exclaim, ââ¬Ëyouââ¬â¢re crushing meâ⬠¦ mercy, have mercy! ââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬ . To my surprise t he body right on top of me answered my cries of help. It was Elie, the boy I remembered from my original work camp, he was the one who received 25 lashings. What a surprise to meet him here! I was surprised and a little delighted that someone I knew had made it this far. I explained to him how I was tired, and how my feet were swollen and hurt me because of the ice cold stiff ground we were forced to run on. In addition I told him I was worried that the weight of the people would break my violin and that I needed to find a way out. I had hid my violin under all of my garments while I ran and wherever I went to keep it safe. This violin was the only link left that I had with the outside world.I needed to keep it safe at all costs. I managed to slip away from the cluster of bodies and found an empty part of the room where I pulled out my bow and brushed off my violin of all the dirt and snow. I took a moment to observe what the Germans had broken us down to. I can only describe it as l ifeless skeletons, who live only to see their next ration. The sight was too much for me to bear. I thought of the most moving and inspirational piece that I knew and I began to play parts of a Beethoven concerto. I knew my ultimate fate yet I continued to play.As things calmed down, I had noticed that my music had put many to sleep including Elie. I played for about ten minutes until I had finished my piece, thatââ¬â¢s when the guards came for me. With club in hand I was held back as I watched my violin get smashed, crushed and turned to nothing. I had just witnessed my last true happiness, my last connection to the world outside these gates, outside these restraints. I opened death with open arms because I knew that though they could kill my body, they could never kill my legacy.

Accounting assigment (Depreciation Memo) Assignment
Accounting assigment (Depreciation Memo) - Assignment Example To get the depreciation amount, subtract the scrap value from the cost of the machine and then divide it by the useful life of the machine (Weil, Schipper, and Francis, 2012). This method is simple to use. Its calculations are easy as the same amount of depreciation applies for each year. There is, therefore, no need for recalculating the value again unless there is a revaluation of the asset. It is also easy to forecast future income since you already know what your depreciation will be (Weil, Schipper, and Francis, 2012). The method tends to ignore the fact that assets lose value faster during the first years of use. Since the method applies uniform depreciation on the asset throughout its life, it may give a higher book value than the actual value. In later years, the asset may seem to offer more value than it gives. That is if depreciation is to form the basis of the assessment. Under this method, depreciation of an asset depends on the level of activity during that period. A period where the output level is high would record higher depreciation values comparative to years with low production. To get the amount of depreciation, divide the depreciable amount by the total expected units the machine would produce in its lifetime and then multiply the answer by the periodââ¬â¢s production (Weil, Schipper, and Francis, 2012). The units-of-production method produces the closest estimate of depreciation to actual depreciation. Since it uses activity level as a basis for determination of depreciation, it fairly allocates depreciation to the periods as per the usage of the asset. In so doing, it matches the depreciation expense to revenue generated by the asset. In periods where there is no activity, there would be no depreciation. That is despite the fact that the asset would still lose value. The method may also not be applicable to assets whose relationship to production is not direct and hence will not depend on activity level. Assets such as

Panic Disorder - Psychology - Essay Example Taking into consideration the fact that functions such as consciousness, circulation, and respiration are vital for survival, it is unsurprising that particular defenseless people will be hypersensitive to any signs that they will lose consciousness, that they will lose their breath, or that their hearts will stop beating (Root, 2000). Moreover, a number of patients are predominantly terrified of symptoms that signify that they could be losing control over vicious urges directed toward others or themselves (Stein & Hollander, 2002). Likewise, a number of patients are particularly responsive to indications of behavioral or psychological ââ¬Ëdyscontrolââ¬â¢ due to the probable effects of being hospitalized for ââ¬Ëwildââ¬â¢ or ââ¬Ëmadââ¬â¢ behavior, or perhaps shamed for uninhibited behavior (Stein & Hollander, 2002). The patientââ¬â¢s anxiety that a critical organ, such as the brain, lungs, or heart, or behavioral mechanism is about to stop working is a fundamenta l element of the cognitive mechanism of panic disorder (Taylor, 2004). Due to these concerns, patients vulnerable to panic attacks have a tendency to focus their attention on any mental or bodily encounters that are not explainable as normal. A second attribute of panic disorder that challenges clinician and offers a profitable opportunity for the psychologist is the fixation of attention on the idea of an imminent tragedy. The tragedy that they fear subsequent to the start of the attack is not just the development of the panic disorder, but the likelihood of the much serious different explanation of their symptoms; specifically, that at this point it may not be the ordinary panic, but a swiftly grave process or a severe disruption of behavioral or mental functioning (Hurley, 2007). Besides the fixation on inner consciousness, the idea of approaching disaster absorbs the core of the patientââ¬â¢s thoughts and is usually so realistic that the

Australia Study - Essay Example They were a traditional race; caves and rocks were their temporary abode. During the era of pre-European settlement in Australia, according to Crawford (2003 p. 38), they were approximately 500 000 Aboriginals, speaking about 2000-2500 different languages living in groups which had distinct languages and culture, who identified themselves with the language they spoke. When the Indonesians (Macassans) came to the shore of this remote island, the brought with them goods: knives, blades and fishing nets to trade for the local cucumbers and other goods. In this process, the Aboriginal picked up new words from the Indonesians and changes were inflicted on their dialect. (Crawford, 2003 p. 43) On 26th January 1788, England made its first settlement in Australia at Sydney Cove at Port Jackson (Walsh and Yallop, 1993, p. 33); this marked the beginning of a drastic change in linguistic background and the cultural heritage of the indigenous people of the island. According to the authors, it wa s made a high priority matter to establish a channel of communication between the colonizers and the aboriginals and subsequently measures were taken to enhance the linguistic interaction between the two parties. Banting (2002, p. 8-10) states that the impact of British Colonization in the Aboriginal land was colossal, many aboriginals, he says, were killed in the battles defending their land from the British or succumbed to the diseases brought on by the colonizers. He further stated that the natives who survived were taken prisoners and were forced to work for the British. Furthermore, the Tasmanian Aboriginals were completely wiped off the center of the earth by the European settlements. Crawford (2003, p. 43) states that the colonizers settled in the island by introducing a new language and a whole set of new technologies to the local inhabitants, as a result of which the lifestyle as well mindsets were manipulated to suit the requirements of the existing situation. In this way, the rich cultural and spiritual background of the aboriginals received a severe blow and most of their traditions and rituals were eradicated in the process. Moreover, Crawford reveals that during the 1800ââ¬â¢s, the Aboriginal children were placed in missionaries where they were only permitted to speak in English as per the British administration policy, which contributed, heavily to the loss of the traditional language. There was a Gold Rush in Australia in 1851 when gold was discovered in the region. Almost 700,000 emigrants from United States, China, England, Poland and parts of Europe flocked the country to find their fortune (Banting, 2002, p. 10). This must have contributed to the establishment of English as the language of expression in Australia since the new emigrants from different outlook would have been in need of a common mode of communication and due to their proficiency in English, the language would have further reinforced its root in the Australian soil in this process. Leitner (2004, p. 54) points out factors that accelerated the destruction of aboriginal habitat. He is of the opinion that intermingling of traditional multilingualism with the ââ¬Ëintruding languagesâ⬠was a chief reason of the demise of the ancient culture. Secondly, he

The theory and practice of risk management Dissertation
The theory and practice of risk management - Dissertation Example There has been a major turbulence in the credit market which can be traced to the institutional changes brought about in the housing finance sector, in developed countries. Housing finance markets were deregulated, leading to a heighted competition in the credit lending market, and the integration of housing finance with the capital markets further worsened the crisis (Hoggarth & Pain, 2002). Also, the rapid development of technology brought about significant changes and played a key role in developing and strengthening the money market funds. The wide-scale use of technology further led to a global economic boom and helped in reducing the interest rates to a considerable extent. This increased the profitability of banks to considerable extent. Bank profitability is defined as a result of internal and external determinants (Short, 1979; Bourtke, 1989; Molyneux and Thornton, 1992; Demirguc-Kunt and Huizinga, 2000). Internal determinants include size, capital, credit risk, costs etc. T here is a positive relationship between size and profitability of banks (Akhavein et al, 1997; Smirlock; 1985). ... After the introduction of the Building Societies Act, various building societies were converted into banks, while the rest of the building societies enjoyed unlimited commercial liberty under the Act. Changes such as these, added to the already competitive market. The banking sector was rapidly transforming during this period, following such changes. It was during the period 1991 ââ¬â 1996 that the mergers and acquisitions increased drastically in the UK. The new entrants in the market comprised of non-financial institutions such as football clubs and insurance companies who were given authority to enter the retail market. Apparently, such drastic changes in the banking and financial services industry, in the U.K., gave rise to critical challenges, as the external environment in which the banks operate became increasingly concentrated. Banking regulation was relatively weaker, thus increasing the vulnerability of the sector, and significantly altering its power to address the ris ks faced by it. The case of Northern Rock: The bank which operated on Northern Rock, is one such glaring example of the vulnerability of the banking sector as well as the credit crunch which ensued such rapid transformations in the U.K. banking sector. This was the oldest running bank in the country, with over 150 years of business, however, its failure posed serious questions and left doubt regarding the effectiveness of the regulatory practices. The inefficacy of the regulatory practices coupled with the vulnerability of the bank, highlighted its inefficiency of responding to the crisis, hence services of the Bank of England were sought as a last resort.

Assessment 3 - Essay Example Both sets of findings were evaluated using perceptual maps. High taste will reflect the high quality and high entertainment is intended to serve as an excitement factor besides communicability to help maintain high customer satisfaction. Initially, the likely early adopters will be targeted specifically to ensure a successful start. Their traits are also identified in the report, and the brand name is justified. Recommendations are then given to address a number of possible issues that may arise and in anticipation of opportunities for learning. This report details the business launch strategy for the product identified in assessment 2 collectively referred to by the Conversations brand name. The ideas gathered earlier are now developed into a virtual product ready for launching. The aim is to have an enhanced understanding of all the elements necessary to make the launch successful and to ensure that this success transpires. This strategy could have been approached by means of a product launch checklist but this does not always prove to be effective (Daniels, n.d.). Therefore the goals, readiness and constraints are presented in the form of this report. In consideration are the areas (in terms of product qualities) in which demand can most likely be created, the potential competitive advantage, the target market, and suitable product characteristics. The positioning statement is also defined, and the chosen brand name is justified. The following areas are therefore covered in this report: Recommendations are also made to deal with possible problems arising. The detailed planning could then ease the task of strategic marketing to ensure the launch is successful and that Conversations becomes a well-established brand in Australia. The marketing strategy usually poses the most significant challenge for all types of companies (Jain & Haley, 2009: 27), so the usefulness of this report extends beyond simply

Child Development - Essay Example The book covers the general theories that explain include development process outlined in relation to the age of a child, the aspects that one has to look closely in childââ¬â¢s development process, the main problems that may be hinder a childââ¬â¢s development, and the required environment to ensure healthy child development process. The booklet will be a worthy companion for all beginners in childcare or child development studies. 2.0 Major Child Development Theories 2.1 Piaget Cognitive Development Theory Jean Piaget was a Swiss theorist who died in 1984. Piaget believed that childrenââ¬â¢s thinking pass through four systematic separate stages with qualitative changes in each stage (Shaffer & Kipp 2010, 294). According to Piaget a stimulating environment and maturation are the most important aspect in this stage. As the child begins to explore and make connections with the physical world many changes occur in the baby and start to acquire skills and knowledge about their environment. Below are the various stages of a childââ¬â¢s development according to Piaget theory as explained by Shaffer & Kipp (2010, 294). Sensory period (0- 2 years). The child attains significant gains in its thinking as they progress. Children at this stage mostly use motor and physical skills and senses in exploring their worlds, to enhance cognitive development. Pre operation stage 2 to 7 years. Children become less reliant on senses and physical exploration. They become illogical thinkers and have inability to conserve their memory. Concrete Operations 7 to 12 years. Children in this stage develop more elaborate logical thinking, but still need concrete materials to reach a logical conclusion. This explains that children will require blocks while solving math problems. Formal operation (12 years... This report stresses that child development theories explain that a childââ¬â¢s development has to be holistic, which calls for attention in all aspects of a childââ¬â¢s growth and development. A child has to develop mentally, intellectually, emotionally, cognitively, spiritually, physically, and any other attributes that make them whole and healthy. The family setting and the society are the single most important schools for children. The author of the paper declares that the child struggles to put in place their thoughts, they achieve better learning and development and develop increased confidence levels compared to those supported by their instructors. Piaget in his child development theory illustrates factors that have to be observed in ensuring a holistic child development. This paper makes a conclusion that Children learn first from their parents and the pope around them before interacting with the outer worlds, implying their future life depends on their immediate family and the concepts learned. To ensure an effective learning process, there is need to put in place effective measurement approaches that would portray the progress of a child in their holistic development at home and at school. This would indicate the learning progress of each child and help in identifying children requiring special attention. Therefore, a childââ¬â¢s learning process is essential in impacting the required skills, morals, values and qualities that guarantee a better life in future.

Essay on Asymmetric Threat and Differences between International and
On Asymmetric Threat and Differences between International and Domestic Terrorism - Essay Example This form of intimidated has caused the nation to suffer economically as the security of the citizens is compromised while working thus affecting productivity. Terrorism is among the asymmetrical risks affecting the United States. The term asymmetrical threat refers to a threat where the group causing the terror is widely spread and operates within a shadowy network. The group is difficult to identify as it is camouflaged within the citizens living in the country. The organized groups are at times well funded and possess technology and weapons that are used to cause terror within the country. In simpler terms, asymmetric treats can be used to refer the technique of warfare that is not fair. The term fair in war can be used to refer to the use of surprise or unconventional weapon during the war. Asymmetric treat is successful mainly due to the use of the attackerââ¬â¢s strength to exploit the opponentââ¬â¢s weakness. Politics plays a significant part in the nature of terrorism w ithin a country. The United States have been attacked by many threats from Muslim nations. The world trade center came under attack from a Pakistani decedent in 1993 called Ramzi Yousef. The group parked an explosive filled rental van in the packing lot of tower one. His idea was to collapse the tower onto the second tower using urea nitrate. The bomb did a lot ofà destruction but did not collapse according to Ramziââ¬â¢s plan (Post, Ruby & Shaw, 2002). The paper will evaluate some of the asymmetric threats in the history of theà US and the cause of action taken by the government to counter these asymmetric threats. The government can act through legislative and executive means. This means that the legislative arm of government can create new law or the executive can make laws responding to the treat. One of the significant asymmetrical threats suffered by the US in the resent past includes the September Eleventh bombing of the trade towers. The threats become eminent due to the influence of the US on foreign Muslim nation and the war against terrorism. Prior to the bombing, a series of bombing aimed towards the US and its allies had been witnessed with bombing in Kenya and Tanzania in 1998, claiming a total of 19 US casualties and a significant number of the nations citizens (Post, Ruby & Shaw, 2002). The organization responsible for this attack and the threat was the Al-Qaeda group headed by Osama Bin Laden. On September 11, the group hijacked four passenger airliners and attacked Americaââ¬â¢s trade center which doubled as a symbol of the nationââ¬â¢s economic and military strength. The air strike resulted to the destruction of the buildings and theà killing of 2,726 people on American soil. The action taken by the legislature was aimed at ensuring that such an attack did not take place again and capturing the mastermind of the attack. The public law 107-40 was among the law passed giving the president the power to use force necessary to elim inate any organization responsible. Laws governing judicial detentions were amended to allow secret detention. The department of homeland security was created during this period. The USA patriotic Act allowed the USA government to interdict terrorist and also a criminal statute against those harboring terrorists (Monaghan, 2000). The post World War II world raised increasing concerns regarding the communism threat. Those accused of communism and involvement with the

Carnivals of the Animals Essay Example for Free
Carnivals of the Animals Essay 1. The reason why the work was written: Camille Saint-Saens wrote the ââ¬ËCarnival of the Animalsââ¬â¢ while he was on holiday as a light hearted musical joke. It was originally planned for the students of Sain-Saens at the music school where he taught piano, Ecole Niedermeyer but he had little time to compose. The work was subtitled ââ¬Å"Grand Zoological Fantasyâ⬠and it became Saint-Saens intent to perform it as a surprise at the annual Mardi Gras concert of cellist Charles Lebouc in Paris in February 1886. 2. Saint Saensââ¬â¢ opinion of the work: The first performance of ââ¬ËCarnival of the animalsââ¬â¢ was on March the 9th, 1886, peformed by pianists, Saint-Saens and Diemer. Composer and pianist. The work was requested by Franz Liszt to be played again. After the second performance, Saint-Saens refused to allow any more public performances of ââ¬ËCarnival of the Animalsââ¬â¢ as he highly feared that it would ruin his reputation as a serious composer. His work then remained unpublished except ââ¬ËThe swanââ¬â¢, publicized in 1887. His will read: ââ¬Å"I expressively forbid the publication of any unpublished work, with the expectation of ââ¬ËThe carnival of the animalsââ¬â¢, which may be issued by my usual publishers, the gentlemen Durand and Cieâ⬠. After his death in 1921 the full score was published in 1922. Saint Saens composed the work as a musical joke, he thought that if it was published it would ruin his reputation as a serious composer so he did not have it published until after his death (apart from the publication of ââ¬ËThe Swanââ¬â¢). 3. Romantic Influences that can be identified in the Carnival of the Animals: Saint-Saens used several different concepts to create a romantic aura about the music. ââ¬ËCarnival of the animalsââ¬â¢ has a distinct song-like melodic line, this has been achieved by combining the fluctuating dynamics and the chromatic chords. Also, Saint-Saens designed his work using robato so the player must feel the music and storyline himself. Saint-Saens created his work for the piano and orchestra just after it was invented. The piano was another romantic influence because it had just recently been invented and it was a very sought after and expensive instrument. 4.My ideas and opinions as to why the work remains a popular significant work: I believe that the work remains this way because the way it was written made it very unique and it also told a story; these things are factors in why it has remained a popular piece for so many years. ââ¬ËCarnival of the animalsââ¬â¢ shows how to feelings and emotions of something/someone via. music. Another reason was that Saint-Saens was a very famous and talented artist ââ¬Å"a virtuoso pianist of the highest orderâ⬠so most of the work he did was popular, the fact that it has remained popular for so long is because the work was very different from any other and Saint-Saens correlated humour into it.

Jobless Essay Example for Free
Jobless Essay Millions of workers have lost their jobs due to downsizing. At the same time, many organizations are complaining that they cannot find qualified people to fill vacancies. How do you explain this apparent contradiction? A recent news came out dated June 6, 2013 by Reuters that Philippines jobless rate stood at 7. 5% in April, the highest in three (3) years according to the National Statistics Office (NSO). Philippines is said to be the Southeast Asian country with the highest rate of unemployment even the fastest growing economy a jobless growth indeed. Downsizing strategy is common nowadays in business sectors and firms. This is to improve the financial performance of the firms by reducing the cost they invested in human resources, increase productivity to whom that is left and increase the speed of decision-making by reducing the layers of management and becoming closer to the customers. A lot of workers were affected due to downsizing. Moreover, not to affect the overall performance of the business, workers that is left must be the best ones. These are the people that are capable in doing the job, not only to fill the vacancies but have contributed well enough to the business, functioned well or even exceeded the job expectations from them. Working experience and educational background helps this people to be more competitive compared to others. This, I termed as the qualified people. They are the effective ones. Business sectors are keeping them. These people are their aces. They are the organizations apple of the eyes. That is why they are hard to find. Few are considered qualified people. Millions of people maybe looking for jobs but are not qualified. It is because these people, considering the poverty growth in the population, they work practically for money. Self-improvement may only be a secondary reason which includes behavior towards work, leadership skills, quality work and the like. On the other hand, qualified people prioritize self-improvement, and, in turn, money comes naturally.

The facilities manager can embark upon the process of addressing the workspace needs of the business in the full realization that space planning is much more than simply interior decoration and the supply of furniture. It is the conscious planning and design of the work environment to facilitate the delivery of products and services. Constraints problems:- Some typical problems that can occur at work include:- Time constraints:- Conflicting deadlines Resource problems Time constraints: one of the most common problems in all organizations is lack of time and too much to do. This is time management skills such as work planning and prioritisation are so vital in order to get the most out of time. We should apply time management skills to our work every day in order to complete for any time constraints. Conflicting deadlines:- Another problem that are very likely to experience at work is conflicting deadlines, when two or more colleagues need to complete work for them at the same time. As we seen, these types of problems are best resolved by negotiation between all the parties concerned. Sometimes, colleagues will happily agree to their work taking second place to another deadline once they see that it is more important than theirs or has drastic consequences for the business if it is not met. Resource problems:- Resource problems arise when two or more colleagues need the use of resources such as meeting rooms, laptops or projectors at the same time and there are not enough of these resources for everyone to have their own. This type of problem can be quite easily remedied by using a booking system, maintained by member of the administrative team. For example, they would keep a booking diary for each of the resources and staff would be required to book these resources ahead of time to secure their use. This type of system is a good solution to most resourcing problems because it places the allocation of the resources under the responsibility of an unbiased third party, who will deal with any conflicting needs in an objective and business focused manner. The constraints and problems face in room allocation:- Room Suitability and equipments also other problem because time is waste in finding availability of equipments for room which suit the need of a course will appear and disturb the learning process. Problems also affected the quality of students in college not only affected learning process. Space allocation as a process of allocating rooms or areas of space for specific functionality. Space allocation in higher education environments such as academic office, teaching and learning space, staff allocation, financial and budgeting, etc. Resource allocation models relate the inputs of the educational process to the resources required. ). In higher education environment, facilities play a major part especially on teaching and learning process. There by, a good management of the resources has to be established and focusing to the students. Mainly teaching and learning space allocation is a common problems found in colleges. Strength of college student increase, programme and departments in the college are the factors create to the problem. The health and safety and environment issues which impact on role as facilities manager:- Health and safety:- Health, safety and security procedures need to be followed in order to prevent unauthorised access to the building. The event organizations must be aware of the emergency procedures that are used by the site where the events are being held. They will need to talk to the facilities manager to find out what happens in an emergency, where the nearest fire exits are and what kind of sound indicates that there is an emergency. Under the health and safety at work Act 1974, it is the organisers responsibility to ensure that their employees are looked after. The facilities manager has a duty of care to any other people who might be attending the event. Many different aspects need to be considered, including arrangements for the first aid, insurance and food hygiene. Security and confidentiality:- The key purpose of the security is to protect the buildings, employees, equipment and information. Security relates not only to the physical security of the building and its contents, but also to the intellectual property of the organization. Intellectual property consists of all the organizations ideas, original products and services and the brand name of the business, as well as any other copyright material that it owns. There must be organizational security procedures in place to protect these things. The procedures also need to be monitored and overseen by employees within the organization, and any security alters or breaches must be treated with urgency. Confidentiality means that means the protection of certain sanative information so that it is only seen by those authorised to do so. Maintenance:- Many accidents at work are caused by faulty or poorly maintained work equipment. Employers have a duty to ensure equipment is maintained and in good working conditions. They must make sure that maintenance logs are kept up to date showing when machinery and equipment was last serviced and inspected. Total quality management This methods looks at the quality and performance of the products produced; it is not just looking at the overall quality of the institute services instead looking at involving all the employees at all stages and levels of the production process to add quality to the services so that at the end it meets the customer satisfaction or demand. Total quality management looks at the overall quality measures which used by a factory including managing quality design and development, quality control and maintains quality improvement and quality assurance. Risk assessment:- The main aim of the regulations is to reduce harm by requiring the assessment of all potential risks and the creation of action plans for emergencies. Employers must complete and review risk assessments at set times and make modifications to safety standards if there are any significant changes in working practices or equipment. These risk assessments must form part of a systematic safety record. A risk assessment should: Identify hazards in the workplace Identify those workers who might be harmed and how Evaluate the seriousness of the risk of harm from identified hazards Record the significant findings in a record that can be stored and used again A good risk assessment of the workplace should identify these hazards, assess who is at risk from them and identify control measures that can be put in place to reduce risk. Ethics:- An organization works to achieve corporate aims. Operational activities refer to anything a business does in order to achieve its aims. Ethical behaviour within a particular business is different from an ethical business. An ethical business sets out from the beginning to work ethically and ethics form a part of its strategic aims. Ethics deals with inner values which are a part of corporate culture and shapes decisions concerning social responsibility with esteem to the outside environments. An ethical matter is present in a state when the performance of a person or organization may damage or benefit others. Thomas M. Jones, ethical decision making by individuals in Organizations: an issue-contingent model, academy of management review 16(1991), 366-395.The formal definition social responsibility is managements obligation to make choices and take actions that will contribute to the welfare and interests of society as well as the Organization. (Eugene W.Szwajkowski, (1986); and Keith Davis, William C. Frederick, and Robert L.Blostrom, (1979). Importance of ethics:- Satisfying essential human needs: honesty, fair and ethical are one basic human needs. Each workers wish to be such himself and to work for a company that is fair and ethical in its practices. Creating honesty: a company that is understood to be driven by moral values is respect in the society even by those who may have no information about the working and the businesses or an organization. Good leadership skills: in the organization driven by values is respected by its workers. They are ordinary thread which brings the workers and the decision makers on a common stage. This goes an extended way in aligning behaviours within the organization towards achievement of one common objective or mission. Improve in the decision building: decisions are determined by values. For example an organization that does not value competition will be fierce in its operations aiming to clean out its rival and set up a monopoly in the market. Secure the society: ethics succeeds law in protection the society. The law equipment is often found acting as a silent observer, not capable to safe the society and the atmosphere. Technology, for example is rising at such a quick pace that by the time law comes up with an instruction we have a newer technology with new fear replacing the older one. Lawyers and public interest litigations may not assist a great deal but ethics can. Ethics always tries to make a sense of good and bad in the when the laws organizations and fails. Ethics can stop company from harming the society or atmosphere. Corporate social responsibility:- CSR as the voluntary actions that business can take over and above compliance with minimum legal requirements, to address both its own competitive interests and the interests of wider society. Corporate social responsibility is the continuing commitment by business to behave ethically and contribute to economic development while improving the quality of life of the workforce and their families as well as of the local community and society at large. Conclusion:- All organizations work in different ways and have different systems and procedures which they expect their staff to carry out in the course of their day to day duties. The operation of administration procedures is important since the organizations activities must be coordinated and planned. If inadequate administration procedures are in operation, the organization may suffer from a lack of efficiency and effectiveness since it does not have access to all relevant information. Administration procedures obviously play a vital role. They are the means by which the organization is able to operate as a whole. Any organization can have good ideas and well motivated employees, but without procedures to ensure that functions are carried out, these may be unsuccessful.

Character Eric Draven:A Hero with Faults in the Film, The Crow :: Movies
Character Eric Draven:A Hero with Faults in the Film, The Crow The story of "The Crow" (a graphic novel turned movie) is the story of Eric Draven, a handsome young musician living in the dark gloom of a gothic-industrialized city plagued by continual rain. He is set to wed a beautiful girl when she is raped and left to die by a gang of criminals. Upon arriving to witness it in progress (taking place at his own home), Draven is killed as well; pushed out of a window as high as a skyscraper. The story then chronicles his resurrection from the dead in order to avenge their murders. His only lifeline (or shall we say deathline) is through a black crow. The crow is the connection between the dead and the living, providing Draven with the means to be immortal for one night only. If the crow is harmed then Draven will lose his immortality and assume mortality, putting an end to his plans for revenge. The conflict of the story comes as Draven attempts to execute the criminals one by one, but is cut short by the harming of the crow. He fights to overcome this and prove successful in his journey. There is a strange duality between the character of Eric Draven as a cultural legend and the actor who played him, Brandon Lee. While Draven became a legend of the story, Lee became a legend in reality. Lee was accidentally shot and killed while filming "The Crow"; the product of a gun and a scene gone awry. Lee's death came at the verge of a rising career and coincidentally, occurred at the exact age of his father's death. Lee, as many people do, became legendary not for his deeds so much as his death. Eric Draven became a legend, or legendary figure, more from the qualities he possesses as a character. Draven is portrayed as strong, powerful, and in control, fueled by his angry death. Lurched out of the living world, the love he felt while alive has propelled him back into a heightened mortality--a supernatural state of being. He is not the average man anymore, he has risen above that level of mundaneness to fulfill his purpose. But the twist comes in the fact that he still has human characteristics, and suffers because of them. He is burdened with memories of the past, and memories of his previous life.

Legalizing Abortion and Back-alley Abortionists :: Argumentative Persuasive Topics
Legalizing Abortion and Back-alley Abortionists à à à à The head of one of the major pro-choice/pro-abortion organizations in the U.S. has said: "In 1972 there were 1,000,000 illegal abortions and 5,000 to 10,000 women died from them." The data would indicate that legalized abortion is a godsend for women. This essay will examine the truth or falsity of the above quote in all of its complexity. à True? Or False? No one knows. For the obvious reason that illegal abortions have never been reported. There are no statistics, no numbers anywhere to report. Therefore, if anyone tells you that there were X numbers of illegal abortions somewhere in a certain time, they are guessing. The pro-abortion leader may guess 1,000,000. The pro-life spokesman may guess 100,000, but both are guessing. à There is only one reported figure that can lead us to some degree of accurate estimate of the numbers of illegal abortions and that is the number of women who died from illegal abortions. Many nations report only one figure for women who die, lumping together women's deaths from spontaneous abortion (miscarriage), legally induced abortion and illegally induced abortion. Such statistics are no help. The United States, since the 1940s, has reported such deaths separately, so we know the number of deaths from illegal abortions. Good! Now if we knew how many illegal abortions it took to cause one death, we could easily calculate the total number of illegal abortions. The problem is, no one has the slightest idea how many it took, and so we're back to where we started from. à How many women died? The chart used on the floor of the US Senate during the tumultuous debate on abortion in 1981 was compiled from official U.S. statistics and was not challenged by the pro-abortion forces. It shows that after Penicillin became available to control infections, the number of deaths stabilized during the 1950s at about 250/year. e.g. 1956 = 250. Note that by 1966, with abortion still illegal in all states, the number of deaths had dropped steadily to half that number - 120, because of new and better antibiotics, better surgery and the establishment of intensive care units in hospitals. This was in the face of a rising population. Between 1967 and 1970 sixteen states legalized abortion. In most it was limited, only for rape, incest and severe fetal handicap (life of mother was legal in all states).

Educational Psychology Essay example -- essays research papers
Essay Topic (Unit 10 ââ¬â Question #3) How would you as a teacher encourage intrinsic motivation in students? Intrinsic Motivation à à à à à Intrinsic motivation can be defined as ââ¬Å"motivation associated with activities that are their own rewardâ⬠(Perry 2003). It is motivation that stems from your inner feelings and views which feed your desires to accomplish and perform. Oppositely, extrinsic motivation is ââ¬Å"motivation created by external factors such as rewards and punishmentsâ⬠(Perry 2003). When you are extrinsically motivated, you are only performing the task for what you will gain from completion. On the other hand, when we are intrinsically motivated, there is no requirement for external rewards or punishments because the activity is a reward in itself. It is a benefit for students to be intrinsically motivated in the classroom because they are leaning for knowledge and not just for marks or grades. Most students are naturally extrinsically motivated at school by things such as grades and their future career. In a perfect world we ââ¬Å"want students to be motivated also by the love of learning, knowledge for the sake of knowledge, and positive feelings about themselvesâ⬠(McKinney). à à à à à One way of intrinsically motivating students is to ââ¬Å"foster student autonomyâ⬠(Specific Classroom Management Methods). Students are more motivated to do things they enjoy than things they do not enjoy. By giving students options and choices, they are feeling in control more than when they are boxed in to the instructions they are normally given. Something as simple as letting the child decide what order they want to do a series of tasks in could make a large difference. One way of fostering independence could be done by giving students a choice from a selection of different books to read. When studying a particular subject, let the students choose what kind of project they would like to do (report, presentation or model). If there are multiple ways of doing something, show the students the different methods so that they can explore and figure out which one works best for them. As a teacher, ââ¬Å"Help students understand how they learn most effectively â⬠(McKinney). Have students keep a journal where they can write down what theyââ¬â¢ve learned from completing assignments. Minimizing pressure is also and important aspect of fostering autonomy.... ...ack. This is a way in which the teacher can use constructive criticism to help students improve their work. It also enables the teacher to acknowledge work that has been done well. On the other hand, self-evaluation should be encouraged by asking the child how they think they did. This takes the child away from searching for the external motivation of your praise. It will instead lead them to want to do well for themselves, not just for their teacher. Intrinsic motivation can be increased to fabricate the life-long learners educators wish for and society needs. Teaching children to look for internal motivation is not an easy task and cannot be mastered by one teacher alone. All teachers need to make it their main focus for students to make it their primary motivator. References McKinney, Kathleen. Encouraging Studentsââ¬â¢ Intrinsic Motivation. Jose Rizal in UST Essay
Fortunately, Rizalââ¬â¢s first romance, with its bitter disillusionment, did not adversely affect his studies in the University of Santo Tomas. His love for higher education proved to be greater than his love for a pretty girl. After finishing the first year of the course in Philosophy and Letters (1877-780), he transferred to a medical course. During the year of his studies in the university, which was under the Dominicans, rival education of the Jusuits, he remained loyal to Ateneo, where he continued to participate in extra curricular activities and where he completed the education course in surveying. As a Thomasian, he won more literary laurels, had more romances with girls, and fought against Spanish students. Motherââ¬â¢s position to higher education. After graduation with the highest position in Ateneo, Rizal had to go the University of Santo Tomas in order to prepare himself to a private career. The Bachelor of Arts degree during Spanish times was equivalent to a high school diploma today. It merely qualified its holder to enter a university. Both Don Francisco and Paciano that Jose should pursue a higher learning. But Dona Teodora did not want him to study more. Evidently she had a premonition that to much knowledge would imperil his child life. In a family council in the Rizalââ¬â¢s home in Calamba, she vigorously objected to have her beloved Jose acquired a higher education. She was thinking of the safety of her son. She know the fate of Filipino intellectuals-Father Burgos, Dr. Antonio Ma. Regidor,Jose Ma. Basa, and others of 1872-who were either executed or exiled by the Spanish authorities, and blamed their sad fate to their learning. Fearful of the Spanish authorities who seem to frown on those Filipinos who learn to much, she warned her husband. ââ¬Å"Do not send Jose again to Manila. If gets to know to much, they will cut off his head!â⬠Jose, who was present in their family council when his mother said this, was shocked. He know her mother was a woman o education and culture: she even taught him and inspired him to write poetry; she came from a family of high learning ââ¬â her own brother ( and his uncle)Jose Alberto Alonso had been educated abroad and could speak multiple Spanish, French, English and German. Rizal enters the university. In April 1877, Rizal, who was bearly16 years old, matriculated in the University of Santo Tomas taking up Philosophy and Letters. He enrolled in this course for two reasons: (1) his father like it and (2) he was ââ¬Å"still uncertain to what career to followâ⬠. He had written to father Pablo Ramon, Rector of the Ateneo, who had been good to him during his days in Ateneo, asking for advice in the choice of career. Unfortunately, Father Recto was in Mindanao and during those days it several months to travel a letter from Manila to Mindanao. Consequently during his first term (1877-78) in the University of Santo Tomas he studied Cosmology, Metaphysics, Theodicy and History of Philosophy. It was during the school term (1978-79) that Rizal took up medicine, enrolling simultaneously in preparatory medical course and the regular first year medical course. Reasons Why Rizal Hate UST 1. Filipino Students are racially discriminated 2. Dominican Friars are hostile to him 3. The method of teachings were obsolete and repressive Reasons Why Rizal Took Up Philosophy & Letters 1. He is not certain as to what course to take 2. His father like it Reason For Taking Medical Studies 1. It is the advice of the Rector of Ateneo, whom he consulted for a choice of career, finally answered his letter, and recommended medicine. 2. He wanted to be a physician so that he may cure his motherââ¬â¢s failing eyesight. Rizalââ¬â¢s Love Affairs in UST Leonor ââ¬Å"Orangâ⬠Valenzuela Leonor Valenzuela the fourth girlfriend of Rizal. Several months after during Rizal sophomore year at the University of Santo Tomas, he boarded in the house of Doà ±a Concha Leyva in Intramuros. The next door neighbors of Doà ±a Concha were Capitan Juan and Capitana Sanday Valenzuela, parents of a charming girl named Leonor. Rizal a medical student from Calamba was aà welcomed visitor in the Valenzuela home, where he was the life of the social parties because of his clever sleight of hand tricks. He courted Leonor Valenzuela, who was a tall girl. Almost as tall as Jose himself, and had a regal bearing. He sent her love notes written in invisible ink. This ink consisted of common table salt and water. It left no trace on the paper. Rizal, who knew his chemistry, taught Orang (pet name of Leonor Valenzuela) the secret of reading any note written in the invisible ink by heating it over a candle or lamp so that the letter may appear. But as with Segunda, he stopped short of proposing marriage to Orang. Romances with other girls After Segunda Katigbak he courted a certain ââ¬Å"Miss Lâ⬠. After a few visit he stopped wooing her. After Miss L he courted Leonor Valenzuela (Orang) but stop short of proposing marriage. Rizalââ¬â¢s next romance was with his cousin Leonor Rivera. Between Jose and Leonor spranga beautiful romance and became engage. In 1879, the Liceo Artistico ââ¬â Literario (Artistic Literarylyceum) of Manila held literary contest it offered a prize for the best poem by a native or a mestizo. Rizal submitted his poem ââ¬Å"A La Juventud Filipinaâ⬠. (ToThe Youth Filipino). The board of judges was impressed of Rizal poem and gave it the first prize consisted of a silver pen, feathered shaped and decorated with a gold ribbon. The inspiring poem beseeched the Filipino youth to rise from the laziness. Finishes Surveying course in Ateneo (1878) During his term in University of Santo Tomas (1877 ââ¬â 78, Rizal also studied in Ateneo, he took the vocational course leading to a title of porito agrimensor (expert surveyor)). In those days it should be remembered, the college for boys in Manila offered vocational courses in agriculture, commerce, mechanics and surveying. Rizalââ¬â¢s unhappy days at UST. Rizalââ¬â¢s Ateneo boy wonder, found the atmosphere at the UST a suffocating to his sensitive spirit. He was unhappy of this Dominican Institution of high learning because (1) the Dominican processors were hostile to him, (2) the Filipino students were racially discriminated, and (3) the method of teachings were obsolete and repressive. Decision to study abroad After finishing the fourth year of his medical course, Rizal decided to studyà in Spain. He could no longer endure the rampant bigotry, discrimination, and hostility in UST. His uncle, Antonio Rivera, Leonorââ¬â¢s father, encourage him to go abroad. Both Paciano and Saturnina, whom he contacted secretly, were of similar opinion. For the first time, Rizal did not seek his parentââ¬â¢s decision and blessing to go abroad, because he knew that they, especially his mother will disapprove his plan. He did not also bring his beloved Leonor in his confidence. He had enough common sense to know that Leonor, being a woman, and young and romantic at that, could not keep a secret. Thus, Rizalââ¬â¢s parent, Leonor, and the Spanish authorities knew nothing of his decision to go abroad in order to finish his medical studies in Spain, where the professors were more tolerant and understanding than those of the University of Santo Tomas. In 1880, the artistic literary lyceum opened another literary contest to commemorate the fourth centennial of the death of Cervantesand was opened to both Filipinos and Spaniards. Many writers participated including Rizal who submitted an allegorical drama entitledâ⬠El Consejo de losDiosesâ⬠(The council of the Gods). Rizal won and for the first time, an indio defeated several Spanish writer. Other Rizal literary work as an Thomasian: ââ¬Å"Junto al Pasig ââ¬Å", ââ¬Å"Abd-el-Azis y mahomaâ⬠, ââ¬Å"Al M.R.P. Pablo Ramonâ⬠. Rizal was the champion of the Filipino students in their frequent fight against Spanish students. In 1880, Filipino students in UST Founded ââ¬Å"Compaà ±erismo ââ¬Å"and Rizal was the chief of his secret society and led various street fight.. After finishing the fourth year of his medical course, Rizal decided to study in Spain. He did not seek his parentââ¬â¢s permission. Thus Rizalââ¬â¢s parents, Leonor, and the Spanish authoriti es knew nothing of his decision to go abroad in order to finish his medical studies in Spain.

Case Study: Orange Electronics Ltd. Essay
After studying this case study, we end up in the next key points: Orange Ltd is a TV producer and needs a strategy in order to maintain its market share, given that the MNCs may work as threaten due to their global financial strength and network. As the TV market has been very volatile and the customers keep on choosing what to buy considering of price value and special features of the products, Orange Ltd has to overcome the challenge of bringing new products in a very short time to the market at attractively competitive prices. The process involved in the cabinet production, which is the component responsible for the delay of the new product release is now taking 18 months. The companyââ¬â¢s goal is to reduce this time by 4-5 months. According to the case study, the 2 different options involving process reengineering and location of component sources were considered as follows; either finished moulds sourcing or base moulds sourcing and finishing thereafter. In the first option, where the company imports ready moulds to produce the plastic cabinets, it has to consider of many parameters such as reducing the lead time, the quality of the product that is outsourced, and of course the reliability with the supplier, so that they save money in the end. In order to make this reality, Orange Ltd will have to make extended research on the market and find the appropriate supplier of moulds that produces them up to their final form. In the second option, where the company imports semi-finished moulds in their base form and, as it has the equipment of building modes, Orange Ltd will have to take into consideration the same parameters as for the first option, including the extra work the mould would want to be finished and ready for use. For both options, it is crucial for Orange Ltd to coordinate with other companies that will act as suppliers, in order to reduce the time among the release of new products. Different coordination modes between firms are required to synchronize interdependent activities, ensure visibility to match supply and demand, align actions and decision with the chain profitability, and acquire new capabilities from joint efforts. These modes help the participating members, which are here Orange Ltd and the supplier of moulds, to advance supply chain profitability by reducing lead times. In this specific case, it would be crucial for Orange Ltd to find suppliers with the appropriate know-howà within the borders of India and sign a long-term contract (which means trust between the two parts), in order to minimize the transportation costs and of course not reduce the quality of the outsourced product, which here is the mould, either finished or not.

Grandfatherââ¬â¢s Journey by Allen Say Essay
Question 1. Describe how the story is structured to influence your response to the text. Question 2. Describe one of the storyââ¬â¢s major settings. How is it constructed and what is its significance to the story and its ideas? North America is the major setting in this book. North America holds a lot of new technology and everything is new and spectacular to him, the trains, the enormous rock sculptures and an endless farming field are examples of this. There is also a bad side to this place; there are huge cities of factories and tall buildings with thick smoke coming out of each building. But above all, best place was California, where there were a strong sunlight, the Sierra Mountains and the seacoast. Along the way he had met and shook hands new people, which had different cultural backgrounds to him. This setting is constructed in a way that the more the grandfather travels the more he liked it and wanted to make the ââ¬ËNew Worldââ¬â¢ his home. This setting shows that the cultural barrier can be broken and people should go out and see the world and meet new people to develop more familiarity of the world they live in. Question 3. How are you positioned to respond to the major character/s of the story? What values are represented through them? Question 4. Describe the extent to which language and graphics are successfully used together to shape your response. Discuss with close reference to at lease two examples. In the Grandfatherââ¬â¢s Journey, there are a few pages where the graphics and the text connect together to give the reader a better understanding of situation. At the beginning (on page 4) the text was ââ¬ËMy grandfather was a young man when he left his home in Japan and went to see the worldâ⬠. On this page it shows the grandfather in Japanese clothes and the background had very dull colours because he is still in the ââ¬ËOld Worldââ¬â¢. On the next page it shows the transition to the ââ¬ËNew Worldââ¬â¢. The background colours have changed from dull to bright and he had changed into European clothes. The wave that looks very unsteady shows the ââ¬ËNew Worldââ¬â¢. All this happens when you want to ââ¬Ësee the world. On page 17, there is a picture of the grandfatherââ¬â¢s daughter holding a pram with a European doll sitting in it. The text that goes with the page was ââ¬ËAs his daughter grew, my grandfather began to think about his own childhood. He thought about his old friendsââ¬â¢. In the picture the author shows the contrast between the Asian girl and the European girl using different clothing and the cultural difference (seen through the colours of the hairs). When compared, the grandfather began to remember how his old friends in Japan were when they were little. This illustrates ââ¬Ëâ⬠¦think about his own childhood. He thought about his old friends.ââ¬â¢ Question 5. Discuss the attitudes and values of the text and your personal response to these. Question 6. Describe at least one link you can make between this book and another/other texts you have read or viewed. How do the texts compare in terms of the ideas presented and how do you respond to these ideas? One of the pages in this book makes us realise that we often label Japan as the enemy in World War II, whilst they were also the victim and had also suffered a large amount of devastation. In the film Pearl Harbour, one of the scenes was Japan bombing Pearl Harbour. This only shows the negative side of Japan, where they were attackers, but it did not show them as the victims suffering from the disaster. This movie is persuading the audience to blame Japan for the damages of the war, where Japan had to go through the emotional breakdowns and physical injuries. Even though the book tells us not to blame Japan for the damages and the movie shows us that Japan was the enemy in World War II, there is still a link between the two texts and that is after a war majority of the participating countries will have, no matter large or small, havocs. I think, because of this, we should not blame a certain country for the occurrence of the war, and should not blame any country since the countries that participated are both enemies and victims of the war.

A Persona Of Renaissance Poet Thomas Wyatt
A Persona Of Renaissance Poet Thomas Wyatt Sir Thomas Wyatt, born in 1503 in at Allington Castle, was fated to become one of English literatureââ¬â¢s most important Renaissance period poets. Wyattââ¬â¢s father, Henry Wyatt, was a Lancastrian who followed a similar life as his son in that he was arrested under the reign of Richard III and was released by Henry VII and rewarded with multiple grants and titles. Wyattââ¬â¢s father was an executor of Henry VIIââ¬â¢s will and a Privy councilor in 1509 and continued to server under King Henry VIII and was eventually knighted. During Wattââ¬â¢s childhood, it is said that he was raising a lion cub when one day the cub turned on Wyatt to which Wyatt stabbed his rapier through the lionââ¬â¢s heart. King Henry VII caught wind of this story and commented ââ¬Å"Oh, he will tame lionsâ⬠. Thomas Wyatt attended St. Johnââ¬â¢s College in Cambridge which was well known for its humanism. In 1520 Wyatt married the daughter of Lord Cobham, Elizabeth Brooke, and they had a son for whom had the Duke of Norfolk as his standing godfather. These early life experiences, along with those to come in Wyattââ¬â¢s future, played a key role in the development of the influences on his works as his relationships with others, his, so called, relationships with Anne Boleyn, and his legal difficulties with arrests and imprisonments (Anne Boleyn Files, ââ¬Å"Sir Thomas Wyatt the Elderâ⬠). Through Wyattââ¬â¢s father, his friend Cromwell, and many other famous poets before him Wyatt was influenced and shaped by these relationships. Sir Henry Wyatt, Thomas Wyattââ¬â¢s father was not a direct influence on the works of his son but was indeed a direct influence on the life of his son which in turn was a key reason for which Wyattââ¬â¢s life and works went down the path which they did. The most evident of these influences was Henry Wyattââ¬â¢s influence on his son to pursue a diplomatic career, leading to Thomas Wyattââ¬â¢s many important position under King Henry VIII much like his fatherââ¬â¢s. Along with Thomas Wyattââ¬â¢s similarities to his father in the diplomatic career, the both of them had arrests and imprisonments. These, along with the happenings in the diplomatic environment led to several of Thomas Wyattââ¬â¢s most famous works as a poet. Cromwell, Wyattââ¬â¢s most notable friend, performed the apprehension of Thomas Wyatt. Once arrest ed Cromwell helped Wyatt out by talking to the tower guard and making sure that Wyatt was as comfortable as possible during his imprisonment, promising that Wyatt would be out soon. Thomas Wyatt is believed to have mourned the loss of his dear friend in ââ¬Å"The Pillar Perishedâ⬠which was written following Cromwellââ¬â¢s execution. However, this was not Thomas Wyattââ¬â¢s only friend. He wrote about several other deaths of close friends such as ââ¬Å"Weston, that pleasant was and youngâ⬠for whom ââ¬Å"all we should weep that thou [Weston] are dead and goneâ⬠(Lean, ââ¬Å"Sir Thomas Wyatt :â⬠). Elizabeth Brooke, Thomas Wyattââ¬â¢s wife, cause him much grief and pain throughout their marriage and is believed to have been the reason for which Thomas Wyatt translated Petrarchââ¬â¢s sonnets with an angered and frustrated lover as the narrator of the works (Lean, ââ¬Å"Sir Thomas Wyatt :â⬠). Wyatt was not only influenced by friends and family, but also other writers of his time and times before him. Francesco Petrarch, a 14th century esteemed Italian Poet, was translated by Wyatt. These translations were not mere practice performed by Wyatt to improve his skills, but these translations maintained their same style and form under Wyattââ¬â¢s pen but they also acquired new concepts and ideas which came together to form a uniquely English style of poetry. These translations; however, seemed to have diverted original questions on severely controversial and significant themes like those of political intrigue and courtly betrayal. Even preceding these translations of Petrarch were Wyattââ¬â¢s translations of Plutarch. Plutarch wrote chronicles based on the lives of Roman and Greek leaders which used extremely engaging details to communicate the deeds of Plutarchââ¬â¢s characters. Wyatt was also an admirer of the works of Chaucer, with whom he had many similarities, but Wyatt wanted the English Literature to be developed into a more respected and elevated form of literature. Lastly is the famous Plato, who which was mentions in Wyattââ¬â¢s poem ââ¬Å"Farewell Loveâ⬠as a source of contemplation and solace (Lean, ââ¬Å"Sir Thomas Wyatt :â⬠). Wyatt is acclaimed to have had fallen in love with Anne Boleyn following her arrival to the English courts in 1522. In fact, George Wyatt, who was Thomas Wyattââ¬â¢s grandson wrote that his grandfather was ââ¬Å"surprised by the sight there of ââ¬Å"(Anne Boleyn Files, ââ¬Å"Sir Thomas Wyatt the Elderâ⬠) when Anne Boleyn was first sighted by Wyatt. Three years after Anne Boleynââ¬â¢s arrival to the courts in 1522 Thomas Wyatt parted from his wife and his unhappy marriage which is believed to have been partly due to his acquaintance with Anne Boleyn. Even though the love match between Anne Boleyn and Wyatt would nearly have been impossible due to the admiration which the King had for Boleyn, she is still indirectly mentioned numerous times in the works of Wyatt. For this reason the love between Boleyn and Wyatt is considered to have been purely ââ¬Ëone-wayââ¬â¢. However, a story in The Chronicle of King Henry VIII depicts Wyatt visiting the home of Anne Boleyn wher e he found her in bed and they had physical relations until interrupted by the sound of the footsteps of her lover. Yet another story told by Wyattââ¬â¢s grandson, George Wyatt, tells of Wyatt entertaining Boleyn with his poetry while she performed some needle work. Wyatt had seen a hanging jewel around Boleynââ¬â¢s neck and snatched it as a trophy. Later on when Wyatt was playing bowls with the King the two were arguing over a shot to which Wyatt took out the jewel he had swiped from Boleyn and used it to measure the shot. The King recognized the jewel and stormed off to question Anne Boleyn about it. Multiple works of Wyattââ¬â¢s were indirectly attributed to Anne Boleyn including ââ¬Å"What Wourde is that that Changeth notâ⬠, ââ¬Å"The Lover Confesses Him in Love with Phyllisâ⬠, and ââ¬Å"Whoso list to huntâ⬠, which was developed off the story of Caesarââ¬â¢s deer who bore the collar of Caesar (Anne Boleyn Files, ââ¬Å"Sir Thomas Wyatt the Elderâ⠬ ). Wyatt compares Boleyn to Caesarââ¬â¢s deer with its ââ¬Å"graven with diamonds in letters plain/there is written her fair neck round about:/Noli me tangere, for Caesarââ¬â¢s I amâ⬠(Wyatt, ââ¬Å"Thomas Wyatt Poetryâ⬠) in which Caesar represent the King with his jewels being worn around the neck of Anne Boleyn. Thomas Cromwell, one of Wyattââ¬â¢s dear friends, apprehended Wyatt in 1536 by order of the King. This first arrest is believed to have been in conjunction with Anne Boleyn. Cromwell assured Wyatt that he would watch out for him but that he would have to be imprisoned in the tower for the time being. Wyatt said that he was stainless and had no reason to fear. Thomas Wyatt watched from his window in the bell tower the executions of Weston, Bereton, Norris, Smeato, and George Boleyn. These sights from the tower led to one of Wyattââ¬â¢s most famous poems, ââ¬Å"Innocentia Veritasâ⬠(Anne Boleyn Files, ââ¬Å"Sir Thomas Wyatt the Elderâ⬠). These sights, as described in Innocentia Veritas, were said that ââ¬Å"The Bell Tower showed me [Wyatt] such sights that in my head stick day and nightâ⬠. Thomas Wyatt was promptly released from the tower as he had already regained the favor of King Henry VIII (Academy of American Poets, ââ¬Å"Thomas Wyatt). In conclusion, following Thomas Wyattââ¬â¢s rather eventful childhood with his ââ¬Ëtamingââ¬â¢ of the lion, he attended the humanism esteemed St. Johnââ¬â¢s College in Cambridge, went on to lead a diplomatic career much like his father, and married having one son. Through Wyattââ¬â¢s father, Petrarch, Plato, Chaucer, Cromwell, Anne Boleyn, and the multiple arrests of Thomas Wyatt, his woks developed into some of the first reputable English poetry written and showcased his relationships with others including Anne Boleyn and his arrests and visits to the bell tower which showed him inspiration for one of his most dramatic poems.

Outsourcing and Its Impacts on Corporations Research Paper
Outsourcing and Its Impacts on Corporations - Research Paper Example The paper looks at the core of Apple's business model and its operations, and identifies the key problem as relating to its need to manage its outsourcing relationships and networks in order to secure its manufacturing strategy. The ensuing analysis makes use of IOM concepts and tools to identify technological and management interventions to make the outsourcing strategy work (Wailgum, 2011; Terry, 2013; Chen, 2012; Kabin, 2013; Langlois and Robertson, 1989; Gupta, Kim and Levine, 2013; Smith, Buddress and Raedels, n.d.; Google, 2013; Reuters, 2013). II. Background Information The business problem is outsourcing and the impact of outsourcing on corporations, and this problem is culled from relevant business and academic articles and cases. In general outsourcing is seen as providing benefit to many companies in terms of paring down costs of doing business and being able to delegate work that is better and more efficiently done by third parties so companies can focus on the things tha t they do well, and which add to their overall ability to compete and do well in their respective industries. Outsourcing has been a key reality in doing business for several decades now, and earnest literature recognizing its importance and its groundbreaking impacts on global business extends to at least 2006, with all industries and all kinds of firms profoundly affected by the outsourcing of different kinds of work and corporate functions to India and other parts of Asia, and with outsourcing becoming such a crucial issue that is has been singled out as a political issue in presidential elections in the US (Engardio, Arndt and Foust, 2006; Hochschild, 2012; Corn, 2012). Of particular interest in this paper is the role that outsourcing plays in Apple Inc. Apple is in the business of designing, marketing and manufacturing devices for communications as well as for multimedia, geared towards consumer markets, together with computing devices, software platforms, services, and content and apps developed by parties for the operating systems and software platforms that the company develops. The core products of the firm include its iconic iPhones smart phones and iPad tablet computers, as well as Mac computers and laptops. Platform-rendered services out of its core computing platforms are iTunes, and the Mac Store, as well as its App Store, which serve up music and other digital multimedia content, as well as third party software and apps. Together these software, services, devices and content delivery platforms make up an ecosystem that caters to the comprehensive network of products and services for everyday consumer computing and telecommunications. The company is also branching out into new areas of computing, including search and cloud computing, with a growing array of core technologies being developed and or acquired to beef up competencies in those emerging areas of consumer computing, and in reaction to new market realities and opportunities, as well as c ompetition initiatives and strategies. Its core competitors include Microsoft, Samsung, Google, Motorola, HP, Nokia, and HTC, for different aspects of its primary businesses (Google, 2013; Reuters, 2013). Apple has been extraordinarily successful not just in its own technological sector, but in general as an American company reaping extraordinary levels of revenues and profits, even besting oil in terms of its overall market valuation. This is reflected in the high historical
